But if you can get to grips with that page count, the book has endless rewards: first of which is reminding us that, though she’s a canonical star today, Streisand’s ascent was rocky, with a mocking stepfather and countless professional rejections to hurdle. Her petty delight at exposing all those doubters – and some of her less-than-gentlemanly romantic partners – is a lot of fun, as are all the encounters with other stars as her career develops.
