I absolutely love Griffin’s work, and this was the book that made me a fan. A house fire claims the lives of two people in Ireland, but the other members of the household know what actually happened, and it’s far more fantastical than a simple tragedy. This is a witch novel, but entirely unique in the way it’s presented, complete with alternate realities, buildings that don’t work quite right and mysterious animals doing the most. Autumn might not be explicitly invoked, but the vibes are baked into the gorgeous, layered prose.
