Lehane’s detective duo, Kenzie and Gennaro, discover that Amanda has been little more than an inconvenience to her neglectful mother, but the story raises the question: does that wipe out Helene’s moral right to her child? The author refuses to give an easy solution to the conundrum, and the book is all the better for it.
