Five of the best serial killer thrillers

Stacy Willingham worked as a copywriter and brand strategist for various marketing agencies before deciding to write fiction full time. She earned her BA in Magazine Journalism from the University of Georgia and MFA in Writing from the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Her debut novel is A Flicker in the Dark.

At the Waterstones blog Willingham tagged five favorite serial killer thrillers, including:
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

Twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s eldest sister vanished without a trace. Her disappearance shattered their family and the two sisters have not spoken since; however, when Claire’s husband is suddenly killed, ghosts from their past can no longer be ignored and they decide to reunite to finally find some answers.

For readers who aren’t afraid to get dark, Pretty Girls goes there. This story is an intricate, tightly-woven tale featuring two seemingly unrelated murders that, of course, are not unrelated at all. While there are some horrifically violent scenes in this book, the story has heart, too, and that’s what makes it so special. Only Slaughter can force readers to feel this level of discomfort before providing a beat of relief at the exact moment we need it. It’s been seven years since I’ve read this one, and it’s still the gold standard for me.

Pretty Girls is among Leanne Kale Sparks's six novels that push the limit of acceptable thriller storylines and Harry Dolan's eight top crime novels about people haunted by their pasts.
